Understanding Abstract Art A Little Better
Abstract art is a popular contemporary art form that resonates with todays artists and art collectors. Abstract art is quite popular because it has a purpose in this world both for the artist and the viewer.
The general understanding is that abstract art is simply a visual language of form and color. While this is true of non-representational abstract works, this is not true for all types of abstract art. The very word “abstract” means a departure from reality. But this departure can actually be a small one. This allows for partially abstract landscapes, figures, or seascapes to be categorized as some form of abstract art.
For the artist, creating abstract art can be a means to channel expression and creative energy that is therapeutic upon its release. While caught in the moment, an abstract artist is often times unaware of just exactly what he or she is creating. Exploration, uncertainties, and emotions all play out on the canvas. One abstract artist, Jackson Pollock has said, “My method of painting is a natural growth out of a need. I want to express my feelings rather than illustrate them.” So for the abstract expressionist, the visual outcome is important, but so too is the entire action of painting. The action is like therapy or a form of meditation for some.
People appreciate abstract art and collect it for different reasons. Some collect abstract art to change their living space and create an atmosphere worth living in that is current with the times. Some people feel a connection with the overall energy that the artwork gives off. Others simply collect abstract art as an investment that happens to look good on their walls.
People question whether many modern abstract paintings are actually fine art. It’s hard for some to get past the sometimes carefree appearance and non traditional methods of applied paint and foreign matter that exist in today’s contemporary art. But at the same time there is a huge following for abstract art. Perhaps the intrigue comes from a simple truth that abstract art is a very raw and unique visual language, appealing both in its form and substance from which it came.
