Do Sony SS-B3000 speakers require a stereo receiver?
I want to buy Sony’s SS-B3000 Bookshelf Speakers for my friend to plug his laptop into when he’s home. But, I don’t want to order them only to discover upon opening that I needed to buy a receiver to power them. Does the term “bookshelf” indicate these are more like computer speakers? I know a stereo receiver wouldn’t fit on MY bookshelf.
Yes, and no, bookshelf is just a term that describes size. Not the way they function. Speakers with amplifiers built in are “Active Speakers.” They can take many forms from teeny, tiny computer speakers to hulking, concert sound “bass bins” like you would use for Ozzfest. Speakers with no amplifiers built into them are “Passive Speakers” and they can be anything from teeny, tiny “Bose Jewel Cubes” that henpecked guys buy so their wives don’t complain (or complain less) about big speakers – to hulking, concert sound “bass bins” like you would use for Ozzfest. Speakers need amplifiers. Laptops don’t have amplifiers. At least not amplifiers powerful enough to drive speakers. The amplifiers they have are more on the line of “pre-amplifiers” that can power headphones and not much else except “power amplifiers.” A receiver is a combination of a radio tuner, a set of pre-amplifiers and power amplifiers. What you want are computer speakers. If you want good ones, type “Best computer speakers” in that search box at the top of the page next to “Search Y! Answers” and about a million different results will pop up.
