RAM help! Timing vs frequency? Plus more Qs?
Hi 
I’m currently looking at getting a new computer built and have 3 questions concerning RAM buying.
1. As I understand it, the higher the frequency the better and the lower the timing the better.
From what I can actually find to buy… it’s either lower frequency and higher timing or vice versa.
For example:
1333MHz DDR3 RAM 7-7-7-20
1600MHz DDR3 RAM 9-9-9-24
Which should I buy?
2. The motherboard I’m looking at says “Support for DDR3 2200/1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules”
I find lots of 2000 MHz RAM but haven’t come across any 2200. I’m assuming from what it says…it won’t accept 2000MHz?
3. What does the other number mean? E.g. PC3-10600 or PC3-12800…and does it matter?
Ahh I see, I didn’t know about the sets. That changes how much RAM I want vs how many I should have for optimal speed.

There is another key point, many systems benefit from memory being fitted in pairs, to make use of a dual memory bus, while the Core I7 has a triple memory bus and uses triple sets for optimum performance.
Depends on the CPU as well, for instance, on the current generation of AMD socket AM3 CPUs, it seems that 1600MHz RAM is an “overclocked” option, though you will find other instances of speeds that are achived by chipset overclocking (though if the maker provides this as a specified option, it should be safe).
The PC3-xxxx number is 8 times the MHz speed, so 1333MHz DDR3 is PC3-10600.
Reviews of various chipsets and CPUs have debated long and hard about speed versus timings, without much to show for it, though it seems that better timings may win.
A rough “goodness factor” is to divide the speed by the CL (first timing number), in order to judge two different speed and timings, with 1333/7 winning on that measure.
