Advantages of Using DNA Kits
The popularity of DNA testing has led to the creation of many companies that are capable of carrying out such tests. There are two types of DNA testing that can be performed; In-home DNA testing and the Chain of Custody procedure. Many people are more comfortable with In-home DNA testing because the sample collection process can be done in the comfort of their own home and nobody needs to know that they are having a DNA test performed. DNA kits can be sent discreetly to your home.
The Chain of Custody procedure requires that the applicant appear at an accredited collection center. The process of obtaining the DNA sample is strict in a Chain of Custody procedure because the results of the DNA test are legally admissible in court. If you are going to need the results for a legal proceeding then the Chain of Custody procedure should be used. The cost of having a Chain of Custody procedure performed is generally higher than that of an In-home procedure.
In-home DNA testing is a convenient way of obtaining the necessary DNA samples that are required to be sent to a laboratory for testing. The company that will perform the testing can send you a DNA kit. These kits normally just contain a cotton swab and a container to hold the sample in for transport to the testing laboratory. The cotton swab is used to scrape the inside of the cheeks to obtain the DNA sample. There is a limited time period for the DNA sample to be submitted to the DNA testing company so be sure you are aware of the time restrictions or you send the sample right away.
It is important to know that the results obtained from an In-home DNA test procedure are not admissible in any legal proceeding. This is regardless of whether or not the company that performed the DNA test was accredited by the AABB.
Before selecting a company to do either an In-home procedure through a DNA kit or a Chain of Custody DNA test procedure, be sure to have performed a detailed research on the company. The company needs to be accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).
